Except for a small area of Lake Geneva, which reflects the image of Mont Blanc in the Alps, the Jura wine district of France in the Rhone River valley culture borders Geneva on all sides, influencing everything from the style of sidewalk cafes to street signs, in contrast with the rest of Switzerland. The St. Gervais district on the Right Bank of the Rhone River has been famous for its watch and jewelry makers for almost 400 years.

The old Flower Clock and a variety of small shops are found in the older Left Bank section, as are all of the government offices, headquarters of the Red Cross and other international organizations, and the city's better parks. Several walking bridges over the Rhone join the two sides of Geneva, making the whole town walkable and feel more like a park than a city. Although best seen on foot, Geneva's public transportation system also is among the most reliable in the world.
